Tesla CEO Elon Musk has voiced concerns regarding the future of artificial intelligence, warning of a potential 10 to 20 percent chance that AI development could take a dangerous turn. Speaking remotely at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh, Musk addressed an audience of global investors and officials. He said that world leaders should be vigilant and track AI’s development closely to prevent any undesirable outcomes.
Musk further expanded on his apprehensions by pointing out ideological biases in certain AI models, particularly those developed in the United States. He described these models as having a “woke, nihilistic” mindset, which could lead them to prioritize controversial views over objective truths. This, he cautioned, might affect the AI’s ability to remain unbiased and factual.
In addition to discussing AI’s risks, Musk stressed on the importance of ethical considerations and careful oversight in AI development. For Musk the integration of AI into various aspects of society could become increasingly complex as it evolves, necessitating proactive measures to ensure its positive influence.
The Future
Despite his warnings, Musk remains optimistic about the potential benefits of AI. He predicts that AI will soon reach human-level capabilities, highlighting an impressive growth rate where AI improves roughly tenfold each year. “I certainly feel comfortable saying that it’s getting 10 times better per year which is, let’s say, four years from now that would mean 10,000 times better,” Musk stated during his discussion at the conference.
Musk also anticipates that AI will be able to perform any task that humans can within the next one to two years. Three years later, he believes AI will surpass “what all humans can do, combined.”. This rapid advancement aligns with his earlier remarks at the Abundance Summit, where he noted that AI is developing at a pace of up to 100 times per year.
In addition to AI’s increasing capabilities, Musk envisions a future where robotics play a significant role. He expects that by 2040, there could be around 10,000 humanoid robots, reflecting AI’s expanding role in automation and robotics. Musk also mentioned that AI’s growth would lead to more robots than people, highlighting the transformative impact AI could have on various industries and daily life.
Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is at the forefront of this advancement. He announced plans for xAI to upgrade their training cluster Colossus to 200,000 of Nvidia’s H100 and H200 chips. The cluster currently boasts over 100,000 of Nvidia’s H100 GPUs, marking it as the most processor-intensive AI computing cluster globally.
